The One Factor That Matters Most to Get What You Want From a Course
Why do you sign up for a course?
Marketers will say that you’re looking to solve a problem, to avoid some pain. The course offers the solution. But what about that course will determine whether you actually get what you want from it?
Yes there are some terrible courses out there. Where the leader doesn’t do what they say. But all things being equal, you might succeed in one good course and not the other.
So what’s the one factor that has an outsized influence on whether you’ll fully show up and do the work?
Believing that your work will be worth the effort.
This is not the same as being motivated.
There will be many times where you won’t feel like you want to do the work. What will keep you showing up? Believing it will be worth it in the end.
This is not about what you’ll accomplish.
We are very focused on accomplishments. Think about how great it will feel when you do the thing. That’s fleeting.
What makes it worth doing?
It’s whether or not you’ll get what you want from the course. But knowing what that is is not as simple as it seems.
Like when I signed up for Ship 30 for 30 — an intensive digital writing course. What I wanted more than anything was to build a writing habit. I’m happy to say that I’m well on my way to doing that. This though was not the key element that made the work worth the effort.
What did creating a daily writing habit mean for me?
It meant that I was finally becoming the version of myself I felt I could and wanted to be. No longer just an onlooker and passive consumer of other people’s stuff. But a creator in my own right. Someone who is in the arena.
This was my ultimate desire. To do something that would help me become who I want to be.
That made the work worth the effort.
